They’re coming soon — and you knew I had to comment

Apple just announced two new phones and a brand new operating system. For the first time, Apple introduced two phones at the same time.

The first is the iPhone 5s – an update and upgrade to the iPhone 5.

The 5s comes in three colors – Silver, Gold and Grey.  Compared to the iPhone 5 it has a faster processor, higher resolution camera and an improved flash system.  Most notable, however, is the fingerprint scanning system on the home key.  While it doesn’t sound like it means a lot, it really is a big deal.

Many corporate environments require cell phones to be locked when not in use.  And more often than not, the lock codes have to be a little more than a 4 digit number.  With the fingerprint scanning system on this phone, those folks won’t have to 1) remember a password and 2) enter it to unlock the phone.  Just run your finger over it, and the phone unlocks.  As one who constantly makes errors entering his passcode, this is a pretty good feature.

Now, that said, there’s just not enough for me to upgrade my phone to the 5s.  But I suspect it will be a great seller and those of you using the older 4 and 4s and eligible for an upgrade might want to think about upgrading and selling your older phone on the open market via eBay or Amazon — you’ll probably come out ahead on the deal.

The second phone released is the low cost iPhone 5c. This phone starts at about $99 with a 2 year contract and comes in a host of colors as you can see in this picture.

The specs on this phone are pretty comparable to the current iPhone 5, but with it’s plastic case, and lower price it should be a hit.

iOS 7 – This is the one I’ve been waiting for!

Along with the release of these two new phones, Apple is releasing iOS 7, the latest version of the operating system.  iOS 7 will work on the iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5s and 5c.  It will also work on the all iPads other than the original iPad, which is still locked at iOS 5.  As you can see from the picture, it has a whole new look and a host of new features.

The software upgrade will be released on 9/18.  So until I get my hands on it and can really give you a handle on what it can do, here’s some of the new features that are part of this update.

  • Control Center gives you easy access to key settings. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and you can control Wi-Fi Airplane Mode, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, screen brightness and music playback.
  • Notification Center is available from the Lock screen. A new ‘Today’ feature gives you a summary of your day.
  • Multitasking – more intuitive  way of switching between apps.
  • AirDrop – share something with someone near to you.
  • Camera  app allows you to use filters in real-time like third party camera apps.
  • Photos in iOS 7 introduces something called ‘Moments’ to organize your photos and videos based on time and location.
  • Safari  has a redesign which lets you see more content.
  • Siri has new female and male voices along with the ability to change device settings and play voicemails back.
  • iTunes Radio is described by Apple as “a free Internet radio service based on the music you listen to on iTunes”

The new software will be released on 9/18 and the phones will be available for pre-order on 9/13 and in store on 9/20

Stay tuned for an update on these features in a couple of weeks after I’ve had a chance to use the new software.

Until the next time, be sure to forward, follow, comment and share this!
